How do I know my switchboard needs upgrading?
Rewireable ceramic fuses, no safety switches, frequent tripping, buzzing or warmth at the panel, and no spare space for new circuits are the classic signs. Any one of them justifies an assessment; several together usually justify replacement.
Are ceramic fuses actually dangerous?
A correctly wired rewireable fuse still opens under a large fault, but it offers no earth-leakage protection, the kind that saves a person touching a live wire, and rewiring one with the wrong gauge defeats even its basic function. Modern RCBOs remove both problems at once.
Does my old board contain asbestos?
Possibly, if the home predates about 1990. The dense black backing panels of that era often contain asbestos, which is a handling and disposal question during an upgrade, not a reason to panic while the board sits undisturbed on the wall.
Will an upgrade fix my tripping problems?
It depends what trips. A modern board with per-circuit RCBOs isolates a fault to one circuit instead of blacking out half the house, and it makes fault-finding far easier. A genuinely faulty appliance or damaged cable will still trip a new board, correctly, but now the culprit is easier to trace.
What is the difference between the switchboard and the meter?
The switchboard distributes and protects your circuits and belongs to your installation. The meter and the supply cabling feeding it belong to the network and retailer arrangement, and physical work on them needs separate accreditation beyond a standard electrical licence. Upgrades touching both are sequenced so each portion lands with the right accreditation.
Do I need three-phase for an EV charger?
Not necessarily. Many chargers run well on a single-phase circuit from a sound modern board. Three-phase suits faster charging and households where big loads stack up in the evening, the load assessment inside the quote is where that question gets a real answer.
A burning smell, buzzing, scorch marks or a warm panel at the switchboard are act-now signs: switch off what you safely can and get a licensed electrician onto it quickly. Never open the panel or pull fuses on the supply side yourself.
